Have Global Settings for invoices and purchases

I would like to be able to apply settings so that they are global.
For example, if I make a GST tax code, then I would like to be able to set it as a 'default' code so that it is automatically applied to products and services when I set up an item (or I can choose it in the item setup) so that when I add an item to an invoice I do not need to select the tax code for every item.
